Dec 2013 - Jan 2014

"This style of Hip Hop comes from a place where critics and publicity don't matter as much as lyrics and beats do."

Independent rap artist, Starvin B's whole steez is a tribute to the golden era of Hip Hop. Starvin has dropped several street albums and his most recent, "Be Like Water" has gained much positive acclaim for the no-nonsense lyrics and flavasome beats. "Be Like Water" is a Hip Hop Album without rules or formulas. There is no catering to the mainstream, underground or the "modern" notion of Rap on this project. It features production by Jm Productions aka #NPAD, Psycho Les , George Black , Tre Eiht Special, One Take and Sauce Jacqson. Artists featured alongside Starvin B are Foul Monday, Spent D'nero, Mic Rippa, Juju, Sean Price , Spit Gemz and Vargo. Many of these songs began as freestyles and satirical moments up at Goblin Music Studios (home of the "Home of the Brave EP" we dropped back in September 2013).  For your listening pleasure we have selected 8 bangers for the vinyl EP. Peep it:

The first Herring project of 2014 is based around Hip Hop producer A.C. Smooth. The son of a preacher man from New Haven, Connecticut, he moved to West Haven at the age of 12 and around that time started to tune into Red Alert on 98.7 Kiss FM and Marley Marl on WBLS 107.5. It was seeing Run DMC at the New Haven Coliseum for Fresh Fest in 1986 that blew his mind and inspired him to get up and he begged his dad for a set of decks, a mixer and a new receiver which he copped for him from a branch of Crazy Eddie's in Orange County.

He met a young Lonnie O at an early age at his dad's church. Lonnie would play the keyboards and A.C would play drums and they would practise together every Saturday (if they weren't at the roller skating rink!).  After wearing out the sampler on his Numark mixer after years of developing the art of DJ'ing, he copped the Ensoniq EPS in 1989 and started to make beats proper and very soon after he set up his production company. A couple of years later he set up the label Hot Combs Hits and dropped the first two Lonnie O releases, the masters of which we are STILL on the hunt for! A.C went to elementary school with K Why, high school with Bink B from FDC and knew Black Dick [pause] from the hood. He ended up producing tracks for all those artists, a couple of which ended up on wax but most have sat unheard for nearly 20 years. What we have for you is 8 tracks from 1993-1995 including the rare private press release of Lonnie O's "It's Like Dat". Also we have the unheard remix of "It's Like Dat", two unheard FDC joints, a track by Tootskee's "unknown" group Modern Occupation and 2 joints
by local CT artist Black Dick. Together they were known as Deep Concentration Camp and together make a KILLER EP of rare Connecticut random Hip Hop ish for the cats. Peep it:

ONE DEEP SEA FISH

It has been a heavy year for the Herring and this is release # 41 of 2013 alone!!!!

So, as you already know, this is the 2nd volume in the Carlos Bess series and follows on from the excellent Sandinistas record we dropped in May. This fillet is probably the most in demand 90s indie piece and we had to bake the reels in order to salvage the masters. Included on the reels were an acapella, an unheard extra track and its instrumental as well as 2 more unheard dub/instrumental joints. Here it is, back from the dead, one of the drops of the year......ONE DEEP YO!
