Collectors of rare 90's Hip Hop will be familiar with the excellent "No More 9-5" 12". - a massive grail and a solid project! Here are all but one joint from that very hard to obtain record as well as some killer unreleased joints from 1992-1995. Mastered by Tony Dawsey. Remastered by Duncan Stanbury. Here's some more info from the man like Malik Turner >>>

Where did you grow up man?

I grew up between Fayetteville, NC, NJ, and New York. Ironically, I went to the same High School (Terry Sanford) as J Cole, but graduated way before him. He went to school with my younger sisters.

What are your earliest recollections of the culture?

My earliest recollections of the culture was in Plainfield, NJ when I heard "A New Heart Beat" by the Treacherous Three at a block party.

When did you pic up a mic?

I started writing when I was around 12, but picked up the mic around 13, performing at house parties in Fayetteville with a friend who was a DJ. I pretty much was hyping him up and spitting freestyles.  Then we started doing our own songs to Hip Hop instrumentals and break beats that he would spin back to back. His mom bought him a four track and we started recording our own sounds.  We were 13 and 14 years old.

Who were your earliest influences - both local and in terms of artists?

My earliest influences were Moe Dee, LL, Run DMC, Dana Dane, Biz, Melli Mel, Mantronics, Slick Rick, ColdCrush, Schooly  D. Later, the Rza and Gza because they were the first people I actually knew who had record deals.  I met them through my cousin Haneef, also Melquan and Shabazz who use to manage them when Rza (Prince Rakeem) was on Tommy Boy and Gza (Genius) was on Warner Bros. I learned a lot from them,  just by being around and being up under Melquan, Shabazz and Rza while being in Trenton, and Brooklyn every summer from NC. Me and my cousin Haneef formed a group called "Supremacy" and since Melquan was managing him, by default I was on the team.

How did you first get into a studio?

I originally went to college for Audio Engineering. The program was closed down and I changed my major. I met my man Master Jam one summer in Trenton, NJ and we went to college together. My cousin Haneef introduced us. Beneficence went to college with us too. Me and Jam agreed at college that we would make records. But, I had made songs in the past, just in a home recording environment. My first professional recording session was at a spot in downtown Brooklyn called Funky Slice. The Sun Of Man was actually our first professional recording (1992) produced by Master Jam.

How did the 9 to 5 12" release come about?

Me, Jam, and two other good friends, Nadir Muhammad and Fahym Sharp recorded a few songs. We decided to release the first record ourselves because we thought begging for a record deal was corny, thus "No More 9 to 5". By then I had some exposure on local college radio stations, even rocked with Treach from Naughty By Nature and Rza at Princeton University.  I did some traveling with Poor Righteous Teachers to their shows and opened for them once or twice. We had performed in NY, Philadelphia, and the surrounding areas. We were opening acts for, Das EFX, Black Sheep, Fu-Schnickens, Rakim, Brand Nubian and others. We did a lot of performing and now felt we could back it up with good product.

Can the cats get a little more info on yr recording history and your work on the Jazzamatazz project? [edit: I meant "New Blackbyrds" but left it in as it lead to some interesting history!!]

I never worked on Jazzmatazz.  But, there is no doubt that we would've worked with Guru on other projects. DJ Sean Ski was his back up tour DJ and had already did work on Bahmadia's album and a few other projects for Guru, including some of the earlier Gang Starr work, pre-Premier. Me and Ski lived together in Jersey City, NJ.  We were dope.  Guru was the first one we let hear the song "Hip Hop Homicide" sitting in this Jeep or SUV he use to drive, in front of Penn Station in NY.  Guru was the one that took us to Master Disk to get the "No More 9 to 5" record mastered after we recorded it.  Tony Dawsey did it as a favor for him and gave us a dope rate. That's why the original vinyl sounds so good.  Guru loved that record and was impressed that we would even think to release it on our own.  So, he wanted to help any way he could. He was working on something and told me one day at his crib in Long Island that our shit was too dope to be released on his Ill Kid label.  I pushed up on him about it. He told me he had something else in mind. But, it never materialized and that's a different story.

But, I met DJ Sean Ski from a college friend that made records with him and lived in the Bronx.  Ski saw me perform at a college show and was impressed.  At that time we were working on the "No More 9 to 5" release. Me and Ski hit it off. I liked his beats and asked him to jump on the project and do a remix. We had a dope session at Funky Slice and he loved our work, professionalism, and studio decorum. Me and Ski stayed tight, but unbeknownst to me, Ski and Guru were very good friends.  Ski invited me to a session at D&D and the rest is history.  Me and Guru became real cool and me and Ski started working on some more stuff while I was still working with Jam.  As I mentioned, Guru was putting some stuff in place for us at the time, so I stayed close to him and Ski. Ski called me one day and said come to D&D.  Donald Byrd was there, Kool Keith, Guru, Shug, Lil Dap, and a few others.  They were playing something Donald Byrd was working on. Guru and Ski hyped me up to get in the booth and spit over the track.  I did and Byrd loved it and asked me to be a part of a new group he was forming called the New Blackbyrds. That song eventually became a song titled, "No you no me", which was a tribute to Jazz and Hip Hop. This project was a sister project, so to speak, to Guru's Jazmatazz, at least that how Byrd promoted.  Byrd was trying to do what Guru did, but by bringing Hip Hop to Jazz. All the stuff Blue Note is doing now with Hip Hop and Jazz was Byrd's idea.  But, they didn't want to touch it back then and he was offended when they didn't want to work out a deal with him. However, I had verbal commitments from Lauren Hill and Guru was a definite, as well as others willing to work with us.

So, I never worked on Jazzmatazz.  I believe Ski did though, doing some scratches. But, I worked with Byrd and we did a ton of shows, including BET Jazz Central, the Playboy Jazz Festival, a lot of radio, etc...  My studio experience is amazing, because I was always the dude in the background observing and absorbing -  back then it was serious for me to be in a session to observe the process of another artist.  That's what made the music so dope; the process. I've been blessed to witness a lot great Hip Hop created by some of the great artists of what is called the Golden Era.

This project started up about 4 years ago. Tabb licensed us the "Brothers in Da Hood" joint, a known Heavy Grail - but we were always looking for more tracks to make a solid project. It took a series of collectors and hardcore Hip Hop Headz to take it to the next. PQuest, a collector and music afficiando from Germany hit me up requesting we release the Big Tabb demos from 1994 - some short snippets had been upped to the tube. Even though it'd been a while, I got back in touch with Tabb [aka Jakk Frost] to find out if he still had the masters of his early demos - he did not. I got back in touch with P and asked if he knew anyone who had seen the demo tape around. It turned out that a copy of the original demo tape had recently sold at auction. The buyer was known to Herring and after a few months the high quality tape transfers were in the hands [fins?] of Herring.

Oh and how is the record? One of the DOPEST on Herring. Very much reminiscent of a "classic 1994 album" - production comes from undercover Philly producer MG aka Mentally Gifted and the beats are on a Beatnuts/Extra P/Groove Merchants/Pete Rock tip - ha - sounds good right? IT IS!!!!

Originally recorded in 1991, but finally released in 1994, the "Suckas Brevity/Hostile Lifestyle" 12" by New Jersey MC & producer Beneficence is what you would probably refer to as an "obscure record". Only 100 copies were ever pressed on indie label Big House Records , so Herring & Beneficence's label Ill Adrenaline thought it might be a good idea to repress the 12" and to add some previously unreleased Beneficence jawn from the 90's. Chopped Herring Records is proud to present the "Contents Under Pressure EP". Peep it!!

Speakeasy - Jive Turkeys & Cat Daddies [CD] 1995 TX

Just released by Herring on vinyl, here is a real obscure project outta Austin, Texas from 1995. The group never officially released anything. There was just this full length demo tape. Reminiscent of the Bay Area sound, on a Hiero/Dereliks/Sacred Hoop [?] tip, this underground bomb was handed to us by French demo tape collector Hakan Dougpark - thanks bro - killer [f]ish. Here's a few words from MC & Producer Tony Hardman [now a footwear designer based in Portland,OR]:

"Kichi and I met working in a record store when I lived in Austin in 94. We were 20 years old and as Hip Hop heads, we hit it off right away. He had been rapping and mixing/scratching for years and I had been involved in a few other groups rapping and doing production. Naturally we came together, inspired by all of the amazing music coming out at that time (the B.U.M.s, Nas, BIG, Common, Artifacts, Co Flo). We spent nights in my mom's garage or in a little lab room at his crib writing and recording as much as we could. The album was recorded over the course of a year in 94/95 with an EPS 16 plus and a Tascam 4 track recorder. We went on through the late 90s gaining local notoriety through the college Hip Hop radio (House of Phat Beats) and performing at a few different spots in the city. Eventually I moved to Denver to go back to school around 2000. The rest is history."

"Utterly mind-blowing cut-n-paste monster - one of the greatest ever made...."

"Operation Clam Dust", an unheard masterpiece, was created between late 2005 & early 2008 -  following-on from the much-loved 2004 "Three Sinister Syllables" mix.  It is a next level exploration into digging, sampling and audio animation. All manner of world breaks, private press LP's, obscure soundtracks, Bolivian polka jawns are up in that piece. Eight years after it was made, there has been nothing that even comes close to the complexity of this project - just check it  - THIS IS NOBEL PRIZE WINNING BREAKS SHIT, FOR REEL!!!

I must've hit up like 50+ cats over 4 or 5 years tryin to find the whereabouts of Eric and Antrion Freeman or David Willaims, from early 1990's, obscure Philly Hip Hop group, Hip City Swingers. Turns out all i needed to do was ask Glenn @ Morning Star Studios in Philadephia, who had done the Tuff Crew, Von Love & S.L.I.M. Rockwell transfers for Herring - turns out he also engineered and recorded the Hip City jawn back in 1992. God bless the City of Brotherly Love. More DOPE Philly  shit soon yo!!

Check this short, yet poignant excerpt, about Hip City Swingers, from group member Eric Freeman >>

How did you guys meet?

"Antrion is my brother and Dave was like family. We grew up in West Philadelphia. My Brother and Dave went to school together where they formed a unique bond. I knew Dave from around the neighborhood baseball team we played on. I was already doing Hip-Hop  with the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ CashMoney. I was the rapper for the both of them before they made it big! So when Bahre (Antrion ) and Dave began their rise to becoming elite rappers, they came to me and we grouped up and formed Hip City Swingers.

This was 1990. So many memories...We had other material that we never finished up due to the murder of Dave.

We never recovered from that...

This vinyl release is dedicated to Dave Williams.

Hip City Swingers - HCS Invasion EP, including the MUCH sought after Hip Hop Grail "I'm The Man" [with previously unreleased instrumental] which was released on 12", in very small numbers in 1992, on B-Brothers Platinum Records, an indie label, set up for that release. Also - we have, a previously unreleased HEATER and instrumental, "HCS Invasion", the title track of this project PLUS one another unreleased instrumental - unfortunately, the vocal version hasn't survived, damn. The final track was on the original cassette single version and CD only, never on wax, until now.

Transferred from the original reels by our man in Philly, Glenn Barrett. Respect bro.

A1  I'm The Man
A2  HCS Invasion
A3  Won't You Be Mine

So, I spose the main question is, how does a cat born in 1997 make such
an authentic "mid-90's-sounding" record? Amswer: Dope influences. MC Gels out of the Bronx, recorded "Wandering Souls", his debut album last year. He is now 18. There is a sick, SICK selection of 90's-tinged, 12-bit, drum-heavy, jazz-sampled heat rocks from producers: Chief Rugged, Mista Izm, Natural Doc, C-Rxch,  Spark Da Izm, Qamar Knight, Esco and more, all selected by the man Gels for what we reckon could be one of the nicest debut projects in recent years- straight up modern classic yo -  BANG!!!

We've been waiting to hook up with DJ Miz for a minute now and the Soo Deff Records connect was how it happened. We have very little info on this MC - he guested on the extremely dope Kool Keith track "Why You Front?" off the "Sex Style: The Unreleased Archives" LP and he also dropped one 12" on Soo Deff Records. One of those tracks "4 Da Heddz" is on this limited vinyl project, but the rest of the joints included here are from 1994-1995 and have never been released or leaked before. Don't sleep - this EP is INCREDIBLE!!!!

Napoleon Da Legend

featuring

Raekwon, El Da Sensei, Sean Price & Sadat X

"Napoleon Da Legend possesses a Shakesperian-like ability to shape and mold flows and words into emotional and visceral streams of consciousness. Born in Paris, France and originally from the impoverished Comoros Islands in lower East Africa, N.D.L. grew up in Washington DC giving his music a unique street flavor mixed with a third world perspective.

N.D.L.’s innovative short-film “Wise Men” featuring the late great Sean Price quickly became a cult hit among Hip-Hop heads with its overt challenge of the music industry establishment. His signature wordplay and voice rose from relative obscurity after the groundbreaking “Oxygen” record featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon.

He has since been touring Europe and the United States having been tapped to perform at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival in June 2015 and France’s HipOpsession Festival alongside legendary French DJ Poska in February 2016. He was a featured artist on Huffington Post Black Voices Freestyle Fridays in March 2016."

"Absolute Value (or The Value for short) originated from Flatbush, Brooklyn in the heart of New York City.

The four members who make up the group went to high school together and formed Absolute Value in 1989. The group includes lead rappers, Sir Prince-The Lyricist and Tah Phrum Duh Bush A.K.A. The P-Nut Butta, The Colored Brother. In addition, the  scratch wizard D.J. Dom Nice The Turntable Terrorist and finally, vinyl junkie and producer The Track Master Manduro 3000.

Born during what can be called the golden age of sample-based Hip Hop, Absolute Value were influenced by other popular late 80's and early 90's groups such as De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, and A Tribe Called Quest. It must be noted however that there was a difference between the typical groups of that time and Absolute Value. As a collective group Absolute Value took a left turn, trying to do their own thing without following a standard pattern, "Our music can be described as party songs with a comical, but rough edge. We all came together with a love of rap and knew we wanted to create our own thing with a different style" (Manduro 3000 quote).  It was the mission of this group to be unique. Songs consisting of rapid fire lyrics over melodies and hard drum breaks added humor on top of the music.

The majority of their music was recorded between 1989 to 1996. Before an official deal with a record label could be agreed upon, Absolute Value disbanded in 1998 and over 16 years of music was shelved on master reels and DAT tapes. Since that period each of the 4 group members did continue on in the music scene and in 2016 decided collectively to finally give the Absolute Value material a proper release."

MEYHEM LAUREN - PIATTO D'ORO ALBUM

This is our 14th project with Meyhem, a relationship that began back in 2011 with the "Welcome to the Great Outdoors EP". Since then we have released "Total Meyhem", "Respect The Fly Shit", "Self Induced Illness", "Raw Cashmere", "Digital Camo" and "More Cashmere" as well as the "Mandatory Brunch Meetings" and "Silk Pyramids" LP's. Ever since he started co-presenting the excellent "F*ck That's Delicious" on Viceland TV with his boy Action Bronson, Mey's profile has been on the rise. For that reason we decided, for the first time EVER on Chopped Herring Records, to announce the release before pre-orders go live - we wanted all the ORIGINAL heads who have supported him over the last 5 years to get a shot at the [coloured] vinyl. So cop quick - this will most likely sell out in a short period of time. Included on the album are 4 Action Bronson features as well as production from Large Professor, DJ Muggs, IceRocks, Roc Marci, Alchemist and more. Exclusive VINYL ONLY artwork comes from the man like Mr Krum. ENJOY....

GRIZZLY GATO

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING/WATER COLORS EP

Grizzly Gato dropped their debut album "While You Were Sleeping" in July 2015 and it was criminally slept on like prison bunks. So Herring have picked up the shiny, dope gauntlet and here, for your delectation is a 10 track EP including 4 joints from the debut release  and 4 EXCLUSIVE joints from the BRAND NEW [as yet] unreleased project "Water Colors".  Also included are 2 instrumentals, one from the first project and one from the second. Peep it yo'z >>

Here's a quick 3 question interview with Grizzly Grimace, one half of Grizzly Gato:

How did you meet, what is your history and what is your mission:

We met in Albany, NY. I was working with a label up there and he [Oddy] was an artist with DJ Truemasters' Beat Shot Music. After knowing each other for a couple years and only working on a couple random songs together, we spoke one night at the Beat Shot Annual Hip Hop Festival up in Albany about me producing an EP for Oddy. Two weeks later we got together to make the first track, which ended up being a skeleton of one of the tracks on "While You Were Sleeping". Oddy wrote the first verse to just the drum break and after asked me to write a verse. We each knocked out our two verses and a month later I found and added the sample for the track. By that point we were 3-4 tracks into the project and thus Grizzly Gato [the group] was born.

We've both been making Hip Hop songs for well over 10 years with a good collection of releases, some more available than others, between the 2 of us. We are both poets and writers before rappers. Oddy with his past of spoken word street performances and I writing and almost publishing poetry works as a high school student and taking up countless poetry and creative writing classes throughout college. We both have the free verse form of expression in our past.
Musically influenced mostly by music we've known since we were kids growing up, whether it be Reggae, Salsa, Hip Hop or Rock n Roll, we bring a broad array of tastes to the table and can be inspired by almost anything. We've both worked with artists of all paths, from Rock n Roll/ experimentation and Hardcore bands as teens, to Hip Hop artists such as J Live and Cage.

We're passionate about human rights and life perspectives. Encouraging everyone to step out their comfort zone and try and see things with different eyes, whether it be sad, happy, depressing, awkward or just silly we try to relate to everyone in hopes they do the same.

The long awaited Vol 2 of the 5PL1T EP Series takes us first to Charlotte, North Carolina and the 4 man group Lower Level. [Some] Cats will know Lower Level from their huge grail "Top Notch/F[l]avourable Fluids". Impossible to find and mighty dope, this heater has been eluding grail hunters for a minute. Unfortunately those masters are almost certainly gwann. But these undercover southern B-Boys were on some ill shit back in the day - check the interview below for more info and just so you know, several of these jawns were recorded in 1994 at the legendary D&D Studios in NYC.

A short interview with Jay Flav from Lower Level:

Tell us a little about the group:

Lower Level came together as a group in 1992: the members are Joseph Caldwell (Jay Flav); Milton Smith (Money Milt); Willie McDuffy (Wil-Nice); Barry McDuffy  (KHB). All recording  on this EP were recorded at D&D studio (NY) and House of Music (West Orange NJ).

Did you all grow up in Charlotte?

We all grew up in Charlotte myself, Wil & Barry grew up in Hidden Valley and Money Milt grew up in Earle Village. Milt was the only one that didn't  grow up with us, we met in another street capacity.

How did you end up recording at D&D Studios?

We were working with Mark Spark at D&D on the production side and stumbled on an engineer by the name of Joe Quinde....he was a beast at mixing. That was around the time we were working with a label out of Newark called Brick Boulevard  that had a production deal with Elektra Records. We were going to be the first act off that label, but when Busta left the Leaders of the New School, Elektra went on a all out campaign to promote The Coming album by Busta, so the label along with other groups on Elektra, such as 3 Boys from Newark [which had another NC native Omniscience] got dropped by Elektra. Unfortunately they let alot of good music go to waste.

What was the scene like in North Cackalacka back in the day?

The scene in NC was crazy, we had mad talent with groups like SoHo (Southern Hospitality) my brothers they were dope, Omniscience the Funky One Liner, Ski Beats (produced Reasonable Doubts for Jay Z) and was also the founder of Original Flavas, Nasty Fruit. ....and many more. Dopeness brother!!! Alot of notable producers such as Fanatic, Mark Spark, Laquan, Skazz Daddy, Wil-Nice and many more....

Who did you look up to growing up?

Locally I looked up to all the cats on Payroll Records such as the Bizzy Boyz and Supreme Nyborn, nationally I looked up to Large Professor, KRS One, Cold Crush Brothers (Almighty K.G) my man, Big Daddy Kane who has been in NC for over 20 years and actually came to a couple studio sessions.

Did you do cats do the support slot  for acts touring down South from the North East?

We opened a lot of shows back in the days. NC was different than other parts of the south because we banged Hip Hop and artists would come down to perform and be amazed that we sounded professional and on the same level as they did. A lot of groups came to perform in NC and left with a new found respect for NC. Even recording at D&D, up north cats would come in the room spark up and pop their neck to the sounds, such as Guru, Sadat and many more.

On the other side is a selection of tracks by NJ Ghettolandz/The Madness affiliate The Burn U.N.I. Produced by our man Izniz....

How did The Burn UNI get started?:

"I (Izniz) was in Rock and Soul Records [NYC] one Saturday putting  the GhettoLandz "X-Files" record on consignment.  The store DJ played the record and another dude who also was getting a record consigned came over to me and said "Yo, the beat on your joint his hot". I asked him what his name was and he answered " La La The Lyrical".  I'd heard La La's track "Tell Me" plenty of times on Hot 97 and plenty of times on Red Alerts " 5 o'clock Free Ride" so I knew who he was. We spoke on doing a collabo and exchanged #'s. I called him two days later and told him I had 2 tracks for him to check out.  He called back and said "These beats are DOPE - I got 2 other cats I rhyme with so I'm gonna throw them on the tracks too" and I said "Aighhht, to balance it out i'll bring Naji from Ghettolandz, so it's 4 emcees.  The four emcees wrote two tracks which became my "Time To Shine" and "Conflict". The rest of the joints came from me sending La La the beats and he would say "yo.... lets hit the studio i got some songs/lyrics for these tracks"...."

What does The BURN U.N.I. stand for?

Incredible gold at the end of the rainbow business!!! We were on the search for these masters for well over 18 months. There seemed to be an issue every time it was time to receive the files. The reels baked badly and nothing could be salvaged, or they were the wrong reels, we meant to bake the other ones. But eventually we received all the individually SOUNDS...which was great for making the Acapellas, which Memory Man did, as well as remastered all the finished tracks, when we received them a few weeks later.....but we made it happen, mostly with the aid of our man in East Orange, NJ , Chioke Kendrick @ http://sample-and-chop.tumblr.com. Peep this crazy rare grail from 1988 re-mastered from the original reels plus an unreleased jawn from 1990, for your listening pleasure >>>

Transfered from the originl reels by the original engineer Glenn Barrett at Morningstar Studios.

What can you say about Stetsasonic.  Formed in 1979, Stetsa are possibly one of the most important and influential Hip Hop groups in the history of the artform. Here are 6 unreleased, unheard and unleaked joints from 1991-1994. The title track "People in the Neighborhood" is a retort to the sanitised world of Sesame Street, dropping realism and social commentary on the state of NY. The song is typical of their enlightened and critical outlook, melding comedy with healthy dollops of satire. Stesasonic did it like no one else, which makes Herring very proud to present this vinyl-only project of UTTER DOPENESS....

Check this interview with Stetsa's Daddy-O:

What are your earliest memories of the
culture?

Listening to a Flash tape and wanting to do what I heard on that tape.

Where did you grow up?

Brooklyn NY, East New York specifically, 928 Belmont between Fountain & Crystal.

How did you cats connect originally?

Delite and I were friends, Frukwan and Wise were introduced to us
by Kevin “Shockalock” Porter, DBC by way of his brother Dawud, and Prince Paul
from seeing him at a block party.

How did you know Delite?

We met in Brooklyn, having similar interests in knowledge and religion.

What was your very first set-up?

Turntables and a tape deck in my apt on Lincoln place in BK.

Who did you learn sampling from?

Marley Marl we (Stetsasonic) went to his apt in Queensbridge and saw him use a drum sampler for the Dimples D record

Tell us about the songs on the ep:

Funk Around: Stets' fascination with funk, almost Suzy pt 2!

Big Up/ Straight up Bragging rights.

Strawberry Letter: We had access to the original Brothers Johnson masters/tracks.

Check The Style: Mic passing at its best.

People in the Neighborhood: Sesame Street from Brooklyn

Give It To Me/ listen to Wise's verse

Any recollections about the recording process?

Same as always, we were all there, arguing until it was right and to our collective liking.

Why did the group disband?

We didn't. We went on to do other things with the promise of working together whenever we see fit.

Any other info you want to add for the olds fans and the new fans?

Look out for new Stetsasonic including an unprecedented 4 albums this year by Daddy-O.
